Seventeen: the size that comes out exactly even

Seventeen people make 136 possible pairs. Four courts produce eight partnerships a round, and eight times seventeen rounds is 136 — the pairs and the slots match exactly, with nothing doubled up and nothing left over. Only a handful of sizes do that; 5, 9 and 13 are the smaller ones.

The bye is the easiest one on the site to check. Exactly one player sits each round, and the chair walks straight down the roster — A in round one, B in round two, on to Q in round seventeen. Everyone sits once, nobody sits twice.

Opponents come out just as even. Every pair of players faces each other exactly twice — not once for some and four times for others, but twice for all 136 pairs. That is the most balanced opponent spread of any chart here.

Seventeen rounds of games to 11 runs close to four and a half hours, more than most groups want in one sitting. Because no partnership repeats, any block of rounds starting from round one is a fair session on its own: stop after eight and every player has had seven or eight games with that many different partners, and still no pair has met more than twice.

Numbers move on the night. If an eighteenth player turns up, switch to the 18-player chart; if you end up one short, the 16-player chart is the even, bye-free version.
