Seven rounds, seven partners, no bench
Eight players split cleanly into two courts of four, so every round produces two matches and uses up four partnerships. There are twenty-eight possible pairs among eight people, and seven rounds times four partnerships is twenty-eight. It lands exactly. Read any player's line down the sheet and you get a list of the other seven names, each appearing once.
Opponents land just as cleanly. Across the seven rounds you face each of the other seven players exactly twice — nobody you run into five or six times, nobody you barely see. Both halves being exact at once is what makes this a whist tournament rather than a partner rotation with the opponents left to whatever falls out.
Seven games to 11 runs a little under two hours with normal changeovers. If you have less time than that, stopping after round four still leaves every player with four games and four different partners. No partnership repeats anywhere on the sheet and no pair meets as opponents more than twice in any stretch measured from round one, so any run of rounds from the top is a fair schedule on its own.
