Nineteen rounds, and why most clubs play eight of them
Twenty players make one hundred and ninety possible partnerships. Each round runs five matches and uses ten of them, so the complete rotation lands on exactly nineteen rounds and ninety-five matches with nothing left over. At social pace that is close to five hours of continuous play, which is a tournament day rather than a club night.
The useful property of this size is that five courts hold all twenty players at once. There is no bye column on this chart because there are no byes: at the end of every round, every player has played exactly the same number of games. That is what makes stopping early honest here rather than a compromise.
Play a fixed block. Run rounds one through eight and take the standings from there. Everyone leaves with eight games and eight different partners, and because no partnership repeats anywhere in the nineteen rounds, any block starting at round one is a complete, balanced schedule in its own right.
Split it across sessions. Rounds one to eight this week, nine to nineteen over the following weeks, same roster. Nothing repeats, so the later rounds are entirely fresh matchups rather than a rerun of the first night.
Keep one chart for the whole season. If your roster changes week to week, leave the letters exactly as they are and print the chart once. Post an A-to-T list of whoever turned up that night by the gate, in a different order each week, and the same sheet gives you a different draw every time. This is how most weekly indoor groups run it, and it saves reprinting.
Five courts also means five sets of scores to keep straight and a lot of shouting across the fence about who is playing whom. Print one copy per court instead of running a single master sheet from the gate.
